Licensed Practical NurseIf you’re a licensed practical nurse who is beginning to worry about your hospital job becoming obsolete, there’s good reason. Modern medical technology now includes an arsenal of mechanical and technological marvels that do many of the tasks that have been traditionally done by the licensed practical nurse. Job growth for this segment of the occupation is expected to remain steady in the next few years to come so there’s no cause for too much worry, especially if you enjoy work in the hospital environment. If you’re a licensed practical nurse who wants to make a change from the hospital to home care, however, the job potential is outstanding. The home health care industry is the fastest growing industry in the country and the opportunities for a licensed practical nurse in this segment of the occupation are growing phenomenally. One of the factors driving this boom in home health care for the licensed practical nurse is the aging baby-boom population. These aging adults are living longer than ever before and make up a bigger percentage of the population than ever before. Even though the baby boomers are staying healthier longer, too, there are many functional disabilities within the population that call for frequent medical attention. The functional disabilities of this baby boom generation are being served by a growing army of licensed practical nurse and nurse’s aid personnel who provide valuable services that allow these aging adults to remain at home, happier and healthier, than if these same disabilities left them seeking residential care facilities. And frequently those technological marvels that are displacing many a licensed practical nurse from the hospital are a boon to the licensed practical nurse practicing in the home health environment. As with all things technological, the goal is to make all devices smaller, faster, and cheaper. This means these devices are portable in many cases so the nurse can easily transport them from one patient to the next. In other cases, this means they are affordable enough for the patient to have his or her own machinery at hand at home. No industry is growing faster than the home health care industry. The role of the licensed practical nurse is a vital aspect of the success of the industry. |
