Nurse Job DescriptionThere are more nurses in the health care industry than any other job description. There are more than 2.4 million registered nurses alone but there are other levels within the occupation that makes this particular aspect of the industry one that is incredibly varied. From setting to setting, nurse job descriptions vary tremendously. A practical nurse job description includes taking vital signs and attending to a patient’s comfort. Answering call buttons, changing bed linens, and bathing and moving patients are often routine procedures for a practical or vocational nurse. The registered nurse job description usually involves more specialized services. In keeping with the more specialized work, more education and licensing requirements must be met. Oftentimes, the registered nurse job description involves patient education, advice, and emotional support that extend to patients’ family members as well. These nurses are often responsible for taking the medical history of the patient and documenting symptoms. Nurses are often required to administer medication and other treatment measures and perform follow-up and rehabilitation examinations. For many a nurse job description varies by department. Nurses in an emergency room need to be able to quickly recognize dangerous situations and provide quick, accurate countermeasures. The surgical nurse job description requires the nurse to be well versed in surgical procedures and equipment. Knowledge of how to interpret vital signs under anesthesia and during the recovery period is very important. A pediatrics nurse job description will likely involve communicating effectively with children who are too young to articulate specific symptoms or situations. These nurses must also be able to convey to the child patient the importance of the procedures he or she is undergoing and how the child patient can best participate. In a school setting, a nurse job description may involve making sure that every child on regular medication takes it according to his or her doctor’s orders and when to isolate a sick child from a classroom. These nurses will also need to know how to treat minor accidents and calm an injured child while emergency services personnel or parents are in transit. With so many nurses needed, the job descriptions are almost limitless. |
